At Onchan School, we are excited to introduce a new initiative designed to empower our students to become more independent and reflective learners. Our 13 Metacognitive Thinking Moves are a set of strategies that encourage children to think about their own thinking, helping them develop deeper understanding, problem-solving skills, and confidence in their learning journey. Thinking Moves don’t just help in schoolwork—they also develop children’s ability to think clearly and creatively in everyday life.
Each Thinking Move is represented by an action and a symbol to make it easy for children to remember. Alongside this, each move comes with a set of words with similar meanings, helping students build a strong vocabulary around thinking. In the classroom, question prompt posters are displayed for children to refer to, supporting them in using these moves regularly.
We believe these are really valuable, lifelong skills that will benefit our students well beyond their time at school.
