Spellings

For those of you who would like to continue practising spellings we will uploading 20 new spellings a week. These will follow the order that we would in school. You can give these to your child to learn and you might want to incorporate a test into the week to keep some of the routine. If your child is not yet on spellings looking at these words alongside their phonics will do no harm, but practise spelling the first 100 sight words found in the phonics section first. If your child has already completed these spellings, please ensure they can still spell them and then set them challenges based on them for example, how many of the words can you use in one sentence?

Writing

As usual we would ask that you keep encouraging any time of writing at home. This may be stories, letters or menus etc. The focus of this writing should be on basic skills such as punctuation and presentation. However also please think about adjectives, adverbs, connectives and starting sentences in different ways. This are all areas that have been covered regularly in school.

Below you will find different Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar activity mats that the children enjoy doing.

SPAG mats

Please find below a link to video which could be used as a stimuli for either writing the ending to a story or to planning and writing a whole story. Underneath the video clip there are also ideas for smaller activities which you could do. Once the writing aspect has been completed this could be turned into an art project, DT (making a puppet theatre) or a drama show. The website has lots of videos available, so please don't feel you can only use this particular one.

Reading

Please continue to read each day at home and encourage a love of reading. Reading can take any form for example instructions, magazines or leaflets etc.

You will find below example of different reading strategies it would be useful to practise with your child and suitable questions to ask based on their book band level.

Reading Strategies

Book Band Questions

Below there are different reading comprehension activities. The Easter themed one requires boxes to be ticked and sentences written, however the second one is about following instructions correctly to colour the pictures. there are also question cards which could be completed verbally together or used as a resource to practise writing in full sentences.

Maths

Practising real life would be very beneficial to your child, for example using it when cooking, adding and subtracting or showing how important times tables are. We have recently been learning about fractions, so incorporating these when cooking or playing games would be useful.

The website already has a Maths Mastery page with helpful information for you:

The following link will take you another website often used within school. It has a variety of problem solving activities you may find useful, but this particular link will take you to the page they have created especially for activities that can be completed at home without a teacher.

Topic

Our current topic is Explorers. Research on explorers is a great independent activity. They could incorporate history, geography, art and/or IT skills into one piece of learning. They could then begin to compare and contrast different explorers and say why they were important and why people still remember them.

Below you will find resources on a mini topic of Spring. More resources will be added to this mini topic as and when they are needed.

Enormous Crocodile

Please find below different activities all related to the Roald Dahl story "The Enormous Crocodile". Of course once you have had a look at the templates you could design your own versions!

Science

Our current topic is Materials. We have been looking at comparing and contrasting different materials and thinking about the properties which make different materials suitable for different purposes. Children could produce leaflets on materials, compare and contrast materials or design their own invention and explain why they have chosen the materials they have.

They could also play this game, which when we played it in class they found hilarious! The idea is to complete the sentence: It would be funny if this cup was made of...because it would... An example answer is: It would be funny if this cup was made of feathers because they would tickle your nose. The object could be changed to allow for lots of versions of the game.

Below you will find some activity cards with different ideas of other science investigations you may wish to undertake at home.
