The 2019/2020 Cohort of Onchan Primary School 6th form were reunited for a fun filled afternoon celebrating the completion of their unique project to build an electric car. Several distinguished guests from the local business engineering sector including Members of the Chamber of Commerce STEM committee, representatives from Triumph Group (principal project sponsors), qualified and apprentice engineers from Ronaldsway Aircraft Company and principal promotion partners ‘Luv Tec’ who also brought along a film crew! The project was additionally supported by Manx Telecom and the Onchan School Association. Paul Moulton from Manx TV was also in attendance and posted an excellent summary of events on Manxnet and You Tube.
The primary objective of the project run by Mr.Clague was to encourage girls to consider a career in engineering, and to further encourage them to take up more Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical subject choices further into their academic careers. It was hoped that in some way this might begin to re-address the heavily male weighted imbalance in those subjects and engineering careers.
The project was also about fun and challenge and was very much in alignment with the schools current sustainable goals objectives and the Islands Biosphere Status pledge of making our environmental impact as positive as possible.
The project was run over the past nine months and despite deadlines being forced back through ‘Lockdown’ issues, was completed last week and the celebration held at Onchan School culminated in each of the 15 members of the project team having the opportunity to drive the car around the school playground.
It has been a most worthwhile and exciting project that the girls will never forget. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported the journey and have helped promote Onchan as a crusader for gender equality and excellence in Science and Engineering.
